Mid 19th Century 3-Section Rosewood Writing Box with Hallmarked Silver InkwellPrice: £995
Stock No. 1001/2021/QSA
A superb brass decorated rosewood three section writing box with deep red gilt-tooled and embossed leather writing surfaces and a hallmarked silver screw-topped glass inkwell. It displays good brass inlay throughout and a starburst brass cartouche to the lid with a lion head crest and latin inscription. Recessed brass campaign carry-handles are fitted to each outside end of the box.
The box opens to reveal two leather clad surfaces, each with immaculate deep red gilt-tooling and embossing to the edges. The inside of the lid contains a fold-out gilt tooled leather surface which houses pen and pencil holders, when pulled out there is space behind for storage. The writing surface folds out on brass hinges, to reveal two further leather writing surfaces (identically gilt-tooled to the first) providing the option of a ‘double’ sized writing surface. As well as the hallmarked silver mounted inkwell (1867), there is also a pen tray, which lifts out to reveal storage underneath and a small ‘stamp and nib’ storage area with a MOP knob. The rosewood surround to the box is delicately inlaid with brass decoration, with good original brass hinges and locks.
Each writing surface opens to reveal further storage with a high quality mahogany finish inside.
Condition: In overall excellent condition. Gilt tooled leather is of a particularly high quality. The hallmark on the silver inkwell is clear with the exception of the makers mark (A.D?) which although unworn is not that clear. Key and lock both work.
