Stock No. 1017/2021/QSA
A superb fitted Lady’s Dressing/Jewellery Box, complete with its large selection of tools and containers.
The case is made of finest Coromandel wood (Macassar Ebony) exquisitely decorated throughout in finest Abalone, MOP and gilt brass inlays.
The lid opens to reveal five hallmarked silver-topped glass bottles in a section at the back. There are 2 further hallmarked silver-topped bottles and 4 rectangular silver-topped containers and several tools in a fitted blue velvet tray. The small inner tray lifts out to reveal a shallow jewellery storage section. The larger tray in turn lifts out (by use of two silver handles) to reveal a large storage section for brushes, hand mirrors etc. Inside the lid is a blue velvet covered pull-out letter wallet, behind which is a removable blue leather backed free-standing mirror.
A pin on the right side of the box lifts out, releasing a spring-loaded, full-width fitted blue-velvet lined jewellery drawer which pops out of the right side of the box.
Hallmarked for London 1837. The makers mark ‘FD’ is belived to be Frances Douglas (wife of Archibald John Douglas – Both Silversmiths). She died young, actually in 1837, thus making it likely that this box was one of her very last.
